ABSTRACT

A Conversation Partner Scheme (CPS) can provide an opportunity for students to learn about acquired communication disorders, develop skills to support adults in conversations and reflect on their personal attitudes about communication disability. It can also enhance communication, facilitate social inclusion and participation and increase well-being for CPS partners with acquired communication disabilities. The format of a CPS generally includes conversation-training workshops followed by face-to-face supported conversations. The COVID-19 pandemic and associated public health guidance necessitated the transition of all components of the scheme (training and conversations) to an online format. The aim of this case study was to investigate the feasibility of an online CPS and explore the participants' experience of this format. A case study design was undertaken with feasibility objectives examining Implementation, Practicality, Adaption, Integration and Acceptability of the online CPS. Data was gathered from students using questionnaires. Online semi-structured interviews were carried out with seven persons with aphasia (PwA) who participated as CPS partners. Technical challenges, duration of conversations and topics of conversations were also recorded. Twenty-seven speech and language therapy students and 14 CPS partners took part in the CPS. Eighty-five online conversation sessions were carried out. All seven PwA and many of the students (87.5%) perceived an online format as suitable for CPS conversations. However, many students highlighted the value of in-person contact and reported that the online format constrained the use of some communication ramps. The PwA repeatedly commended their student conversation partners and noted the CPS provided an opportunity for increased social interaction during the public health restrictions. The online CPS provided a timely opportunity for students to practice supported communication skills and was perceived to be important for student training and communication skills development.

ABSTRACT

Although statistical literacy has become a key competence in today's data-driven society, it is usually not a part of statistics education. To address this issue, we propose an innovative concept for a conference-like seminar on the topic of statistical literacy. This seminar draws attention to the relevance and importance of statistical literacy, and moreover, students are made aware of the process of science communication and are introduced to the peer review process for the assessment of scientific papers. In the summer term 2020, the seminar was conducted as a joint project by the University of Hamburg, the University of Muenster, and the Joachim Herz Foundation. In this article, we present the concept of the seminar and our experience with this concept in the summer term 2020.

ABSTRACT

Co-design is seen as crucial for designing solutions for resource-constrained people living in developing countries. To best understand their needs, user engagement and co-design strategies need to first be developed. In this Design Practice Brief, a process of co-design was created and used to understand ways telecommunication engineers could engage with rural communities in Uganda. It reports and reflects on (i) the experience of co-designing with nondesigners and (ii) creating a co-design structure and developing co-design methods of engaging with community members living in developing countries. In doing so, it offers a format and case study for future practitioners facilitating and conducting co-design with nondesigners and contributes to a knowledge gap in the reporting and reflection of co-design practice. This case study is unique as the co-design practice was achieved remotely (online), crossed disciplines (designers and telecommunication engineers) and cultural boundaries (European and African). It finds that in co-designing with nondesigners, preparation and structure are key, with acknowledgement and management of cultural and discipline differences.

ABSTRACT

Since COVID-19, social distancing has become common, and the demand for untact services has increased rapidly, resulting in an economic phenomenon centered on untact worldwide. Due to social distancing, the untact service area is expanding not only to shopping but also to online learning, home training, and telemedicine, and untact services are expected to expand to more diverse areas in the future. This study investigates four types of untact services: online lectures, online meetings related to work and study, online seminars, and online performances, and the effects of concerns about untact services on the intention of use have been examined using a path analysis model. As a result of the analysis, the perceived usefulness had a positive effect on the user's continuous intention to use untact services. However, depending on the type of untact service, it can be confirmed that the factors that affect the intention to continue using the service differ from each other. Practitioners can use the results of this study when designing untact services in the future. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

Delivery of health care is coming to an inflection point in regard to supply and demand, with joint replacement demand in Canada increasing from 2014 to 2019 by 20.1% for hip replacement and 22.5% for knee replacement.1 Increasing demand, combined with delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic, has created a large backlog of surgical procedures, especially in countries with universal health care like Canada and the United Kingdom, where efficient delivery of health care is even more critical.2-4 Prolonged surgical wait-lists are further compounded by systemic inefficiencies: in North America, health care functions at a productivity level of about 43%;in the surgical care setting, inefficient use of time and space accounts for 30% of costs.5 To address this, various initiatives to increase throughput, such as high-efficiency operating rooms (ORs) and parallel processing with anesthesia block rooms, have been suggested.6 At our institution, to address wait times and increasing demands, 4-joint rooms were instituted in 2004, but successful completion of 4 joint replacement procedures within the assigned OR time (i.e., 4 joints between 0730 and 1530) has been inconsistent.7 This lack of efficiency, with overtime and lack of improvement, can lead to staff disengagement, fatigue and a sense of impossibility of the task at hand.8 To foster self-improvement and staff engagement to work as a team, various models of team efficiency have been developed using the Lean method, Six Sigma and process mapping, which can be quite effective but very resource intensive.9,10 An alternative approach that has shown excellent results in improving the quality of individual surgeon practices is positive deviance (PD) seminars,11,12 which use individual performance feedback to identify team members who outperform their peers. Positive deviance has been effectively used in health care, public health, education and the private sector.13 Positive deviance seminars focus on individual strengths and resources already present, instead of negatives that require improvement. Measures The time interval data were recorded by the circulating nurse using the Surgical Information Systems. The time intervals used to determine OR efficiency were a modified version of those defined by the Association of Anesthesia Clinical Directors:14 anesthesia preparation time;patient in room to anesthesia ready, surgical preparation time;anesthesia ready to procedure start, procedure duration;(procedure start time to procedure finish), anesthesia finish time;procedure finish to patient out of room, and turnover time;start of room cleanup to patient in room.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic brought enormous challenges for health, scientists and academic world two years ago. Social isolation and the inabilities of face-to-face activities generated the emergence of many educational and scientific initiatives. Remote activities gave information and brought company and affection to people which allowed students and professionals from different parts of the world to integrate. In this report we are showing the experience from three initiatives in South America of scientific dissemination in infectious diseases. We discuss the scope of having a permanent practice for access and integration in science using remote communication, which can give great benefits in unequal societies. © 2022 Brazilian Society of Parasitology. ABSTRACT

If 2022 marked the end of a full decade of centenary commemorations in Ireland, it also marked the beginning of what Public Health agencies around the world proclaimed as a gradual "return to normal". [...]whereas we continued learning to live with COVID-19 during the past year, we also witnessed with relief how many of the restrictions affecting international mobility were finally removed as schools, businesses, indoor activities and leisure travel resumed. The social events included a very warm welcome reception offered by the Town Hall on the eve of the Conference;a reception hosted by the Embassy of Ireland, with the participation of the Ambassador, his excellency Mr. Frank Smyth, who remained a very supportive and friendly presence during the conference;a fascinating night visit to the Burgos cathedral, sponsored by the Cabildo Catedralicio, and a delightful dinner party which provided a perfect closing to the first live (and lively) AEDEI Conference held after months of lockdowns and restriction measures. Doubtless, on the special occasion of the celebration of the twenty years of AEDEI conferences, the admirable task of our gracious hostess at the magnificent venue of the University of Burgos, demonstrated, once again, the immense amount of work as well as the deep emotional and intellectual investment involved in the organisation of our successful annual gatherings. The event converged with the official opening of the Manuel Villar Raso Library and a most interesting seminar on the centenary of the publication of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land and James Joyce's Ulysses hosted by the Department of English and German Philology and the new Irish Studies centre.

ABSTRACT

Online synchronous classes and seminars are increasing in universities along with the outbreak of COVID-19. Since the online classes are not in-person condition, it is difficult for a teacher to monitor the learners. In the field of distance education, the need to support learner's concentration has been identified. More effective methods adapted to online classes in universities should be discussed. In this paper, we focus on the teacher's and learners' attention to the material in online real-time classes. We then propose a system that provides feedback on the differences in learners' gaze in order to improve the followability of learners. The proposed system assumes an online environment using Microsoft Teams PowerPointLive and acquires the "gazing point" at every slide-material and "page change history" of the teacher and learners. The results of using the proposed system suggest that it can improve the learner's followability to the teacher. © 2022 Proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age, CELDA 2022. ABSTRACT

These Proceedings contain invited and contributed papers presented in the 13th International Seminar on Nuclear Physics held in Sant'Angelo d'Ischia from May 15 to May 20, 2022. This Seminar is part of a series of topical meetings started in Sorrento in 1986 on the initiative of Aldo Covello and continued regularly with meetings taking place every two or three years in the Naples area. The main aim of the Seminar, entitled "Perspectives and Challenges in Nuclear Structure after 70 Years of Shell Model”, was to focus on the progress made in recent years in the nuclear structure field from both theoretical and experimental points of view as well as on the role that nuclear structure plays in the context of fundamental physics. The specific topics covered during the conference represent the main lines of investigation in this field:• Advanced methods for nuclear structure• Nuclear structure studies through RIB experiments• Nuclear structure & fundamental physics• Special topicsThere were about 70 participants, which should be considered a great success despite the 30% reduction compared to the previous editions. The 13th Seminar, was, in fact, one of the first in-person meetings after the break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which hampered, together with the Russia attack in Ukraine, participation from countries outside Europe. It is worth mentioning that six young international researchers between participants benefited from the financial support provided by the "Young Investigator Training Program 2019” funded by ACRI (organization of Foundations of banking origin and Savings Banks), which also allowed them to carry out one-month research activity at Italian Institutions. The Seminar started with a session in memory of Aldo Covello, who passed away on March 31, 2020. Friends and colleagues, as Luigi Coraggio, Giacomo de Angelis, Francesco Iachello, Nicola Lo Iudice, highlighted his human qualities and scientific achievements. A comprehensive overview of the Seminar topics was given in the following sessions through about 60 general talks and more specialized contributions. We had also the opportunity to celebrate Francesco Iachello's 80th birthday with a special session on Wednesday, before Banquet. The present volume contains 31 manuscripts. All these manuscripts have been peer reviewed. We would like to thank all the colleagues who have acted as referees to assess the suitability of the various articles for publication in Journal of Physics: Conference Series. We are confident that the high quality of all papers contained in these Proceedings will be appreciated by the nuclear physics community.List of Local Organizing Committee, International Advisory Committee, Sponsors of The Seminar are available in this pdf.

ABSTRACT

E-Learning, Blended Learning, Massive Online Courses, Distributed Learning, Webinars Hybrid Events and video conferencing are topics treated for decades. Technology-wise, many opportunities were taken and chances were used. However, in many situations, work places, universities and institutions, lectures, courses, trainings, workshops or informative events were still primarily held on-site. All of them, with their specific advantages and disadvantages (e.g., personal contact, networking vs.Time loss, ecological footprint, etc.). First with the Corona Pandemic and the subsequent measures, all foremost the lockdown situations worldwide, remote working, learning and video conferencing experienced a dramatic boost. The option of preferring on-site, personal meetings vanished completely. Due to this profound change in collaborative that had to become common overnight, people were forced to face and adapt to available technologies. The latter, on the other side, also evolved quickly to provide more and more features to improve collaboration, usability and privacy. Formats for lectures, courses, workshops and collaboration also had to be adapted quickly. The problem was that all stakeholders, both lecturers as well as learners could not that easily change their habits, ways of teaching and learning, interacting, and-not to forget-Their didactic concept, methods and materials. A 1:1 transformation was impossible since different technical background knowledge as well as very different technical and spatial conditions lead to great imbalance in quality of teaching, interaction, use of technology and practicability. In order to address these uncertainties, this work provides a basic set of suggestions for lecturers in form of a pattern collection for setting up educational online courses regarding several aspects like common sense, technology and rules of the game. Since patterns are technology-Agnostic and formulated for a broad audience with different professional backgrounds, they qualify as universal format and at the same time keep the validity of time. Even after almost three years with COVID-19, there is still struggle with technology adaption and format generation. The formulated patterns are based on interviews with experts that worked as lecturers, a larger-scale survey including the results from 63 online questionnaires and one focus group. The resulting set of 19 guidelines was then reformulated as patterns in a mid-high maturity state with the perspective of being further supported by new findings and practical experience. The pattern collection is linked to a process model for evolving pattern libraries from previous work. © 2022 Owner/Author.

ABSTRACT

"Social Europe Days" is a collaborative four-day international seminar held yearly near Brussels, Belgium, by a network of ten European universities from eight different countries. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the seminar had to be offered virtually and redesigned. The final design included synchronous and asynchronous activities, informal and formal interactions, and a focus on empathy for the existential problems faced by participating students and faculty during the pandemic. This article describes the design challenges, the design choices and decisions that led to the virtual seminar design, and reflections based on lead faculty notes, member checking, and student evaluations.

ABSTRACT

The focus of this case study is the implementation of a pedagogical strategy to adapt the laboratory practices of the Pharmacology course in a Peruvian public university, where animals such as rats and mice are routinely used. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the consequent virtualisation of the teaching-learning process, several academic challenges were posed. The 'Practical Seminars' have arisen as a pedagogical proposal that allows faculty to adapt to the conditions of society. They are designed based on selected articles that reflect experiments with drugs, where selected information is adapted, such as graphs, images and even videos. By posing analysis questions allows for students' previous knowledge to be checked;thus promoting an applied critical attitude to clinical situations. With this resource the faculty tried to recreate a significant space for self-learning. The results of students' partial evaluation reflects a performance similar to that of previous years of the course, with teaching staff accepting this modality well. Finally, a space for analysis was generated, in addition to dispensing with the use of experimental animals. Copyright © 2020 FIP.

ABSTRACT

Focus of the seminar While the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many international and virtual opportunities that may have not been possible previously, we were convinced that a face-to-face event could have been more beneficial and impactful (i.e., networking and exchange of best practice). Dr. Ateek's presentation ‘Language analysis for determination of origin (LADO) and whether it works' explored how LADO is used as a gatekeeper by the Home Office with a focus on the perspectives of asylum seeker-participants who went through the process. In the presentation ‘Striving for inclusivity in an exclusionary environment – conducting research with refugees and asylum seekers in the UK', Dr. Reynolds reported and reflected on her own efforts to work ethically, responsibly, and reflexively with asylum seekers and refugees during her linguistic ethnographic doctoral study of communication in refugee and asylum legal advice meetings in the UK context.
